Can Children’s Sleep Apnea Screening Save Lives?

Smiling boy waiting for a dental examWhile many people consider sleep apnea to be a problem that only impacts adults, sleep researchers have discovered that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may start much earlier. Many kids show warning signs of OSA, and without treatment, they are at risk for numerous potential health concerns associated with pediatric sleep apnea, including failure to thrive, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), increased blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular health concerns. Research indicates that early diagnosis and intervention can be essential to helping kids avoid the negative impact of OSA. Unfortunately, the majority of pediatric dentists are still not screening for this sleep disorder, and those who are screening may not be doing so consistently. Consistent screenings for airway obstruction and earlier diagnosis of these conditions will surely change a child’s life, and in some cases, it can save lives too.
